Arsenal came from a one-goal deficit in the last ten minutes to edge past Wigan Athletic 2-1 in the Premiership on Sunday and survive their first defeat at Emirates Stadium. Denny Landzaat stunned the home crowd in the first-half but an own goal by Fitz Hall nine minutes from time leveled the score. Czech Republic midfielder Tomas Rosicky notched his first Premiership goal four minutes later to help Arsenal overcome the stubborn Wigan. The victory put Arsenal in fourth place of the league table with 49 points, just one behind third-placed Liverpool who were handed a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle on Saturday. Landzaat put the visitors ahead in the 35th minute after unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net.
Former England international striker Emile Heskey could have doubled the lead before the break when his superb low shot was tipped by Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann into the post. Wigan's striking duo Heskey and Nigerian Julius Aghahowa continued to bother Arsenal's defense and squandered several chances to extend the gap. In the second half, Arsenal pushed forward searching for the equalizer, drifting in towering Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor who had a goal disallowed for offside in the 72nd minute. In the 81st minute, Wigan defender Hall converted Mathieu Flamini's cross from the right flank into his own net to help Gunners level the score. Rosicky headed home Julio Baptista's cross from a close range shortly after to seal a precious win for the home side.
