Germany skipper Michael Ballack will miss his side's World Cup third place play-off against Portugal on Saturday, while keeper Oliver Kahn will get his first start in the tournament. Hosts Germany are hoping to finish the World Cup in third place, but they will have to do it without influential play maker Ballack, who has an inflammation in his left knee, German Football Federation (DFB) official website reported on Friday. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich keeper Kahn will be handed his first start for the Mannschaft since Jens Lehmann snatched the number one spot from the beginning of the World Cup. "We have a lot to thank Oliver for at this World Cup. He's been a great influence on the young players and he's deserved a place in the team," Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. Per Mertesacker and Arne Friedrich are also out through injuries, giving Klinsmann the chance to field defensive duo Robert Huth and Marcell Jansen. Werder Bremen striker Miroslav Klose will start after he shrugged off a calf injury, in a bid to claim the top scorer award as he scored five goals so far, two ahead of teammate Lukas Podolski and France's Thierry Henry.
