France's winless and goalless record in the World Cup finals was extended to four games after the former champions were held to a 0-0 draw by Switzerland on Tuesday. The result means France shares second place in Group G with Switzerland on one point each. South Korea, who beat Togo 2-1 earlier on Tuesday, are in charge of the group on 3 points. The game brought back memories of France's dismal performance in the finals four years ago where they were eliminated from the first round. The Swiss, who held the French to two draws in the World Cup qualifiers, held their own through out the match and proved dangerous on occasions.
Zidane couldn't help Les Bleus Thierry Henry, playing as a lone striker, missed several opportunities to break the deadlock early in the game. The closest Switzerland came to score in the first half was in the 24th minute when Tranquillo Barnetta's free-kick came off the post and Alexander Frei failed to convert the rebound from close range. Shortly after, Franck Ribery rifled a powerful drive over the bar. Goalkeeper Fabien Barthez saved face for France when he superbly denied a 65th minute header from substitute midfielder Daniel Gygax from point-blank range. France's mediocre performances continued after the break as coach Raymond Domenech refused to field a second striker to support the helpless Henry.
