Egyptian forward Mohamed Zidan scored to give Mainz a stunning 2-2 home draw with German champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Sunday. Zidan put Mainz ahead early in the first-half and shortly after, Manuel Friedrich doubled the lead before Bayern came from behind to earn a valuable draw after Roy Makaay netted twice. Despite the draw, Bayern are close to retain their title as they sit on top of the Bundesliga table with 70 points, five ahead of second-place Hamburg while Mainz lie 15th on 31 points. Zidan, on loan from Werder Bremen, snatched the lead for Mainz after just nine minutes through a great solo effort, he controlled the ball in the left flank before rounding Philip Lahm with a great move and sending a low-shot into the back of the net. Four minutes later, Friedrich extended the lead when he powerfully headed a corner kick past Bavarians' keeper Oliver Kahn. Dutch striker Makaay, who was left out of Holland's provisional World Cup squad by coach Marco Van Basten, pulled one back for the visitors in the 29th minute when he latched on to a fine long pass by Willy Sagnol before making a close-range effort into the net. Makaay secured the precious draw eight minutes later when he scored from the penalty spot. Elsewhere, Schalke were held to a goalless away draw with Werder Bremen.
