Nigeria boss Austin Eguavoen insisted that his side deserved their 1-0 win in the African Cup of Nations Group D opener against Ghana that took place on Monday. “I'm happy with the result because we deserved to win, and we clinched three important points, but we still weren't in top-notch form, the best is yet to come,” Eguavoen told reporters in a press conference after the match. Eguavoen, who praised Ghana's performance in the match, said that he depended on youngsters like Jay Jay Okocha to reinforce the team, given the absence of many key players through injury. The Super Eagles head coach also commended the African Cup organizing committee, Port Said stadium officials and the Egyptian crowds who supported the team during the match.
On the other hand, Ghana caretaker Ratomir Dujkovic expressed his sorrow at losing to Nigeria. “We did all we had to do, but we couldn't find the net, and in the end, Nigeria made use of their chances and secured their victory,” Dujkovic said. “We will try to straighten up our lines before facing Senegal, we still have the chance to make it up and reach the African Cup quarter-finals,” he added.
