En effet Essien a du quitter le terrain après une rude collision avec le milieu de West Ham, Nigel Crocker. Le site de la BBC sport a révélé qu'Essien a été victime d'une grave blessure et qu'il risque de ne pas être en forme pour participer à la Coupe d'Afrique des Nations. Mais ce n'est pas la fin des malheurs pour les dirigeants du Ghana qui ont aussi appris que le milieu d'Udinese Sulley Muntari manquera à la compétition en raison d'une blessure à la cheville. Il aura le pied au plâtre pour au moins 20 jours et aura besoin d'une autre période de convalescence. Il est à signaler que le Ghana est tombé dans le groupe D aux côtés du Nigeria, Sénégal et Zimbabwe.
