A local human rights group has urged the Egyptian Government to pay more attention to Egyptian expatriates by setting up an independent body to take care of their affairs. "Setting up an independent body to care for Egyptian expatriates' issues or increasing the budget allocated for the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Manpower could help improve the conditions of Egyptians abroad," said the Hesham Mubarak Law Centre, a local non-governmental group, in an annual report on rights issues in Egypt realesed Thursday. The centre also urged more cooperation between both ministries to serve the interests of Egyptians abroad in its report, entitled "The Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Egypt in 2009". The report also recommended that some legal measures should be taken to guarantee that Egyptian expatriates would have their rights in case of disputes with employers or any other problems overseas. The Egyptian Parliament is mulling a proposed fund for Egyptian expatriates, aimed at providing financial assistance to Egyptian expatriates in need of legal or other forms of assistance. However, it could not be passed during this parliamentary session, which officially ends Saturday.
