CAIRO - The Egyptian Government said Friday it closed the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt temporarily for two days for Palestinians wishing to move in and out of the Strip. The crossing point, which remained closed Friday and Saturday, will be opened Sunday for Palestinians who arrive at Rafah to try to cross into Egypt, Government officials said, according to the official Middle East News Agency (MENA). "The Rafah crossing point between Gaza and Egypt will be closed for two days starting from Friday to Saturday. It will be re-opened Sunday for the Palestinians wishing to move in and out of Gaza Strip," the officials said. The Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt is the only one that bypasses Israel. It has been largely closed since June 2006. Egypt opens the crossing periodically to allow humanitarian assistance to enter Gaza, where more than 1.5 million Palestinians live. Earlier in the month, Foreign Minister Nabil el-Arabi said that Egypt would permanently open the border crossing to ease the Israeli blockade on Gaza.
