CAIRO - More than 20,000 people organised a 'thank you' rally in front of former Premier Ahmed Shafiq's house in Al-Tagammu' Al-Khames in New Cairo, local media reported. Ex-President Mubarak appointed Shafiq on January 29, only four days after the beginning of the January 25 revolution. After Mubarak's departure on February 11, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, which runs the country's affairs, asked Shafiq to stay in office. But he was replaced by Essam Sharaf on March 3. “We call on Shafiq to form a new party and run in the presidential elections in August,” the protesters declared. “I'm going to create a Facebook page to interact with your demands,” Shafiq replied. He faced harsh criticism in the past days and was asked to resign. “No one compelled me to resign. I faced many obstacles, stopping me from achieving the people's demands,” Shafiq added. After the Friday prayer, Shafiq supporters protested in Moustafa Mahmoud Square, Giza Governorate, and decided to go on strike. “End your strike. I'll think about your demands about running in the next presidential elections,” Shafiq told the protesters.
