CAIRO, May 1, 2018 - The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayyeb, asserted the need for the unity of the Muslim nation and called on the Muslim world to realise the plots against it which aim at keeping the nation in a state of poverty, disease and backwardness. Dr Al-Tayyeb was speaking at the opening session of the high-level consultative meeting of World Muslim Ulemas and Islamic Scholars at the Indonesian Presidency headquarters in Bogor City. The meeting was attended by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and a number of prominent Islamic figures from all over the world. In the speech, Sheikh el-Tayyeb expressed hope for achieving peace in Palestine and the world and ending the injustice and crimes against the Rohingya people in Myanmar. Sheikh el-Tayyeb also warned Muslims against any deviation from their moderation, adding that Al-Azhar's educational curriculum reflects Islam's moderation and sound understanding of the texts of the Qur'an and Hadith. The curriculum, he added, also consolidates in the minds of the students the culture of dialogue and the legitimacy of difference in a way that is a far cry from extremism and narrow-mindedness. Sheikh el-Tayyeb arrived on Tuesday in Solo city, on the second leg of his current visit to Indonesia.
