CAIRO, April 23, 2018 (MENA) - Egypt has, over the past 40 years, successfully acted to achieve food security and increase productivity of crops, said Hussein Gadain, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) representative in Egypt, on Monday. Good agricultural practices and advanced irrigation methods have been applied, not to mention scientific research, Gadain told MENA, adding all that has sure contributed to the expansion in land reclamation. FAO provides technical support for Egypt to help it achieve agricultural sustainability, improve productivity and maintain animal and poultry wealth, Gadain said. Over the past four decades, FAO has been there for Egypt through a set of programmes and projects meant to upgrade the agricultural system, he added. About 170 projects worth some three billion pounds have been implemented in Egypt in co-operation with FAO, Gadain made it clear. He still touched upon challenges that do face Egypt, atop of which the increased demand for water resources that comes as a result of overpopulation. Moreover, the agricultural sector consumes about 85 per cent of Egypt's water resources, the FAO representative said. He added that climate change constitutes yet another big concern.
