An aid convoy to Gaza sent by an Egyptian opposition party left the impoverished enclave after a day-long visit, according to participants in the convoy. Independent MPs and public figures joined the convoy, organised by Al Wafd Party. During the visit, the activists met with Ismail Hanaya, the chief of the ousted government of Hamas that controls the territory. Hanaya told the visitors during the 45-miniute talks that he had stopped reconciliation talks with Hamas' rival, Fatah, due to US interference, added the participants. El-Sayed el-Badawi, the chief of Al Wafd Party, pledged to send more convoys to Gaza "to save its 1.5 million people" who have been under a relentless Israeli siege for three years. There has been no comment from the Egyptian authorities. President Hosni Mubarak ordered the opening of the Rafa border crossing with Gaza last month after Israel's deadly attack on a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla.
