Bomb explodes in Roxy Square, one officer injured

A police officer was injured after a bomb was detonated in Roxy Square, in the Cairo district of Heliopolis. The bomb was planted inside a building in the area, state-owned Al-Ahram reported.
Following the explosion, the area of the explosion was cordoned off, and explosive experts were assigned to clear the area.
On Wednesday, armed forces personnel thwarted a car bomb attack on one of the areas with high military presence on the Suez-Katameya Road. The attempted attack resulted in the death of the vehicle's driver, an armed forces statement said.
Another bomb explosion occurred in Fayoum late Tuesday, were six people were injured, including a police officer, three conscripts and two civilians. The explosion occurred as the civil protection forces were trying to defuse the bomb, causing damage to surrounding shops.
An explosion occurred near the Italian consulate in Downtown Cairo last Saturday, leaving one person dead and nine injured. The explosion is believed to have been caused by a car bomb. The Sinai-based militant group "State of Sinai" reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

Militant groups frequently target security personnel, facilities, electricity pylons and telecommunication branches.
The phenomenon has been on the rise since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
