Abbaseya protester killed, family awaits autopsy report
Published in Daily News Egypt on 04 - 08 - 2011

CAIRO: Protester Mohamed Mohsen, 24, passed away Wednesday night, from injuries sustained during clashes in Abbaseya between armed men and protesters marching towards the Ministry of Defense on July 23.
An eyewitness told prosecution Thursday that a woman standing on a rooftop of a building in Abbaseya threw a big rock at Mohsen that hit him in the head. Reportedly, the injury led to internal bleeding. Hours later, Mohsen was moved to the Nasser Institute, a public hospital.
Activist Mohamed Waked said that the eyewitness has photos and videos of people hurling rocks at protesters including this woman.
Activists accuse General Hassan El-Rowainy, member of the ruling military council, of inciting Abbaseya residents against protesters.
El-Rowainy said in several TV phone interviews, hours before the planned march, that Tahrir protesters intend to cause a rift between the army and the people, saying they were armed thugs.
The prosecution is currently investigating a complaint filed by activists and rights groups. The autopsy report is yet to be issued.
Mohsen's body will be transferred to his hometown, Aswan, after his funeral in Cairo. Activists planned a prayer for Mohsen on Friday at Omar Makram Mosque in Tahrir, but the date and time of the funeral was not confirmed by press time.
Mohsen was a member in the National Association of Change in Aswan and was hailed by many activists and bloggers for his participation in all protests and sit-ins since Jan. 25.
