Security forces arrest 16 Brotherhood members
Published in Daily News Egypt on 03 - 03 - 2009

CAIRO: In its latest crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood, security forces arrested 16 members from different governorates early Tuesday, according to a statement issued by the group.
The detainees include Mostafa Taher Al-Ghoneimy, secretary general of the Doctors' Syndicate in the governorate of Al-Gharbeya.
Taher had been arrested and released two weeks ago for protesting against the government's stance during the Israeli offensive on Gaza.
The arrests came one day after the Alexandria State Security released the remaining detained Brotherhood members who were arrested for protesting against the country's policy regarding the Egypt-Gaza border crossing, saying Egypt was contributing to the blockade on the Palestinians.
Security forces also arrested Mohamed Taha Wahdan, one of the group's prominent leaders in Ismailia, who was also recently released after he spent seven months in jail for participating in protests against the Gaza blockade.
Other members of the group were detained from Tanta, Kafr El-Sheikh, Al-Sharqeya, Daqahleya and Menufiya.
Two members were also arrested in Cairo and Giza.
Brotherhood member Mahmoud Amer, also member in the People's Assembly's human rights committee, told Daily News Egypt that there was no specific reason behind the recent crackdown.
"There are currently no elections or protests taking place, yet the government continues to crack down on the Brotherhood, he said.
"This campaign is one of many unfair and illegal measures committed by our unjust government . this has always been the Egyptian government's [trend] - to violate human rights, Amer said.
