CAIRO: A number of political activists and members of revolutionary movements organized a protest before the Ministry of Justice on Saturday, to demand the immediate release of political activist Ahmed Doma, who was accused of involvement in the burning of the scientific academy, during the clashes that broke out before the Cabinet building on Qasr el-Aini street last December. The demonstrators carried banners “if you imprison Doma or even 100 more activists, we will not forget our cause,” and another saying “if only Doma was American, he would have been released in a matter of seconds,” and “on a hunger strike until Doma is freed.” The demonstrators chanted slogans “freedom for all detainees, we will not let Doma down, this is their perception of change, a small prison becomes bigger.” Hussein Helmy, a member of the youth movement for justice, freedom, declared he was starting a hunger strike, pending the release of Doma, adding that two other political activists also will join in solidarity with him and the hunger strike, Mostafa Ahmed and Mohammed Ashour, a member of the movement of the Arab Revolutions. Helmy told local newspapers that they decided to stage an open–ended sit-in before the Ministry of Justice until the release of Ahmed Doma, stressing that in the absence of a verdict for the release of Doma in the session scheduled for Sunday, they will “continue their sit–in there,” in addition to considering other ways to escalate the pressure on the military junta for the release of Doma.
