SANA'A: An officer was kidnapped by suspected al-Qaeda militants in Yemen's southern province of Hadramaut. “Faraj bin Qahtan, an officer in the Political Security division in al-Mukalla, the regional capital of Hadaramaut, an eastern Yemeni province, was kidnapped on Wednesday morning, by unknown armed men allegedly linked to al-Qaeda as the Security Forces announced that the terror was continuing its attacks against members of the state apparatus. “A motorcycle belonging to terror militants hit him while he was on his way back home,” the source said. Ever since AQAP's declarations that it would systematically target all government institutions, a new wave of kidnappings, bomb attacks and threats swept through the southern region, forcing the government to ramp up its alert level and mobilization of counter-terrorism resources. The incident underscores the high level of lawlessness in this poorest country of the Arabic Peninsula, adding to the challenges faced by President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who took office last month after a year of massive protests that forced out predecessor President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
