DUBAI: The Afghan delegation appointed by President Hamid Karzai to investigate the reported killings of Afghani civilians by an American soldier was attacked by militants in the Panjwai district of Kandahar on Tuesday. Government officials told Bikyamasr.com from Kabul that “the attack was linked to the killings and the reality is that many Afghans want justice to be done sooner rather than later, despite the investigations.” The official, a top ranking security figure, said on condition of anonymity, “the fact that the US apologized is not going to be enough any more because the country is on edge and wants the foreign troops out.” A German press agency, dpa, reporter with the delegation visiting the district in the south of the country said that explosions and gunfire erupted in the Zangabad area of the district where the US sergeant allegedly killed 16 Afghan civilians early Sunday. Fighting was ongoing as the government security forces fired back at the insurgents attacking from different sides, he said. It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties but the reporter said he saw at least one civilian injured. The delegation consisted of senior Afghan officials, including the chief of staff of the Afghan Army, Kandahar's provincial governor and police chief, two of Karzai's brothers, and Tribal Affairs Minister Asadullah Khalid, who is a special envoy for southern Afghanistan.
