SANA'A: Residents in Aden, Yemen's main seaport told Bikyamasr.com that things turned pretty eerie Thursday evening as they saw a large deployment of troops across the city. Near Crater, a popular district, tanks and full-geared soldiers were nervously inspecting vehicles and passers-by “with their hands on the trigger.” Military sources revealed that intelligence had received a warning of an attack against the presidential palace in Aden, prompting the immediate military response. An officer explained that al-Qaeda militants had attacked several checkpoints on Thursday and that as a result the army had decided to take some precautionary measures. Residents in Crater reported that clashes broke out in the evening as Islamist militants tried to break through the Republican Guard defenses, with some medium to heavy exchange of fire. Tensions are further mounting in Aden as the southern Secessionist Movement, al-Harak said it would not let out its efforts to break away from the North. Only a few hours away from the official results of the presidential elections, which will see Field Marshall Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hadi succeed to President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Aden is bracing itself. In Mareb, tribesmen opposed to the regime sabotaged once again the power plant by cutting cables, plunging Sana'a, the capital into yet another spell of darkness. For the past year, Sana'a has been plagues by blackouts, forcing its residents to resort to alternative means, essentially fuel powered batteries.
