SANA'A: In the wake of the presidential elections it seems that Yemen woke up with a mighty hangover. As officials are already reporting an unprecedented turn-out, saying that Yemen has never recorded in its history such political participation, pro-democracy activists already fear that President Abdu Rabbo Mansour Hado will not honor his promises of ridding the country of President Ali Abdullah Saleh's apparatus. “He is a part of the regime and now that he is president we have no real guarantee that he will oust President Saleh's family members from their positions in the armed forces,” Ahmed Fakry a political analyst, told Bikyamasr.com. Despite much violence on Tuesday in Hadramaut and Aden, both southern provinces, the coalition government maintained that Hadi had above 80 percent of the votes. Another source from the UN reported a 60 percent win. “Turnout hit an average of 60 percent” across the country, a monitor who supervised voting across several regions told the press. In either case, Hadi is sure to come out on top since he was the only candidate in the elections and was only seeking to pocket legitimacy. Interestingly, the Southern Secessionist Movement, al-Harak, announced in a statement on Wednesday that the entire province of Hadramaut had failed to vote in a boycott against the power-transfer and that the majority of Aden's ballot boxes had been destroyed, preventing the Yemen Election Committee to count the votes. The ruling party also confirmed today the President Saleh was as planned, on his way towards the capital ahead of the inauguration ceremony staged for President Hadi. As Saleh is approaching Yemen, many Yemenis are wondering whether his return will once again herald another wave of violence and bloodshed, as this time it is his family which is fighting for survival. His sons and nephews still hold strategic posts within the armed forces and no sign thus far seems to be pointing towards a willingness to depart.
