Nigeria police rearrest escaped Christmas Day blast suspect

Abuja (dpa) – Nigerian police on Friday rearrested a man charged with masterminding a series of attacks that killed at least 50 people on December 25.
Kabiru Sokotu, a key suspect in the so-called Christmas Day bomb blast, was caught at Nigeria's border with Chad, almost a month after he escaped police custody.
Sokoto, who has links to Boko Haram, was first arrested in January. But he escaped during an escorted visit to his home.
Shortly afterwards, President Goodluck Jonathan fired national police chief Hafiz Ringim and six deputies.
Police said Friday that they were keeping details of Sokotu's exact whereabouts secret.
In an interview Friday with a Nigerian television channel, a Boko Haram spokesman said the group was open to peace talks with the government.
But many Nigerians question the sincerity of such claims, after a spate of bombings in northern Nigeria in recent weeks.
