Istanbul (dpa) – Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Turkey and the Arab League would propose a new initiative on Syria, Turkey's state news agency Anatolian reported Wednesday. Davutoglu described the current situation in Syria as a “human tragedy” and said Turkey wanted to address the problem through a joint platform outside of the auspices of the United Nations. “We have reached a decision with the Arab League to propose a new initiative, we can't just stand by and be spectators to this bloodletting,” he was quoted as saying. Davutoglu was speaking to reporters at Ankara's Esenboga airport prior to departing on a four-day trip to the United States, during which he will hold meetings with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and the US congress.
