Beijing (dpa) – A Tibetan Buddhist monk set fire to himself Saturday, triggering clashes between Tibetans and Chinese security personnel, according to Free Tibet campaign group. The monk's self-immolation – reportedly the 16th since March, in protest at Chinese rule – occurred in the Aba area, or Ngaba in Tibetan, in Szechuan province, the London-based organization wrote on its website. It was not clear whether the monk died in the act, which was followed by protests led by local Tibetans and monks from the Kirti monastery, prompting clashes with security personnel. Free Tibet wrote that at least one woman was hit by gunfire, referring also to further unconfirmed reports that many had been shot, while numerous people were detained. The Chinese government has stationed a large security contingent in the city, amid fears that violence could claim more victims.
