CAIRO: Lebanese radio reported Wednesday morning that a ship bound for Syria carrying weapons was intercepted in Cyprus by authorities. According to the Radio Free Lebanon report, which quoted Cyrpiot newspaper Politis, the ship was heading toward the Syrian port of Latakia, but had stopped at Limassol to refuel, when authorities were tipped to its contents. The vessel had reportedly sailed from Saint Petersburg, Russia, carrying 60 tons of ammunition, the report said. It did not say when the ship had been seized. Russia is a main ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime that has been facing unprecedented protests since last March. The move has left Syrian activists angered over the move by Moscow. Bassem Toufic, a Syrian who fled the violence last summer, told Bikyamasr.com in Cairo that “this is just another sign that Russia is an ally to dictators and they must face consequences.” ** with dpa BM ShortURL: http://goo.gl/uorrP Tags: Cyprus, Russia, Weapons Section: Latest News, Syria
