Abuja (dpa) – Another in a series of attacks on Nigerian Christian churches left six dead and 10 people injured, according to reports Friday from the north-eastern city of Gombe. The Thursday night attack came barely a day after two bombs went off in the cities of Maiduguri and Damaturu. Ishaya Bako, a church official, told dpa that gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram – which has claimed responsibility for similar attacks in recent weeks – stormed the Deeper Life Church at 7 pm (1800 GMT) Thursday and shot worshipers, including the pastor's wife. An attack at the Roman Catholic church in Madalla left 26 dead on Christmas Day. A three-day ultimatum from Boko Haram ordering southerners and Christians to relocate from the region lapsed on Wednesday. However, the region also has a strong northern Christian presence, which considered the ultimatum as an empty threat. The sect is protesting Western education and culture in the region, and wants the Islamization of all the northern states. President Goodluck Jonathan has vowed to quash the movement, while declaring state of emergency in four states.
