CAIRO: Popular Islamic preacher Mohamed Hassan called for Egyptians to unite, claiming that foreign groups in Egypt are working to destabilize the country and split its citizens. He implored groups to work together despite their differences to fight against these foreign agents. The speech was delivered Monday in Alexandria at a conference organized by the Salafi Da'wah. Over 1,000 Salafi leaders attended. Hassan recently organized a political party called al-Asala (The Fundamentalists) in Egypt's Qena Governate in the south of the country. The party's main principle is the application of Sharia law in Egypt. Around 1,000 new members have joined the party. In his speech on Monday, Hassan asserted that the current crisis in Egypt is not only political but also religious, and must be tackled using religious means. He criticized those who call to implement civil laws in Egypt without Islamic Sharia, claiming that he does not trust people who do not fear God. BM
