CAIRO: Potential presidential nominee Amr Moussa came out in support of activist Asmaa Mahfouz, who is now facing military trial for comments she wrote on her personal Twitter account. Moussa, who was seen supporting activists in Tahrir square during the 18 days of protests that led to the ousting of the former regime, criticized the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces (SCAF) on his Twitter account Wednesday, saying that Mahfouz's comments led her to a military trial while “the violence going on [in] Gerga and Sinai is not confronted with the same extraordinary procedure.” Mahfouz is accused of slander against the SCAF and inciting people against the country's current ruling authority. She has denied the charges, saying she only criticized the SCAF as the the body “performing presidential duties in the country and not for its role as the military.” The news angered many human rights activists in Egypt. Amnesty International has called for the immediate dismissal of charges against her. Moussa, who acted as Egypt's foreign minister and, more recently, the head of the Arab League was not the only potential presidential candidate to come out in support of Mahfouz. Hazem Abou Ismael, a self-proclaimed Islamic candidate supported Mahfouz in a statement on his Facebook page titled “We are all Asmaa Mahfouz.” The Muslim Brotherhood has also criticized trials of civilians in military courts in a press statement released Tuesday, saying they strongly condemn the move and that many of their members have suffered for many years in front military courts.
