Uganda's telecom regulator has issued an ultimatum to Uganda Telecom to pay MTN court-ordered fees within 30 days or face consequences. On Tuesday, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) demanded that UTL pay the fees it owes the South African company's local unit. Last month, a Ugandan court ruled that UTL must pay back fees of some Shs20 billion in interconnection fees to MTN. These were fees that the company had failed to pay in order to allow customers to call across two networks. New Ugandan ICT Minister Ruhakana Rugunda in Kampala said that this issue is currently negatively affecting users on both networks. He said that the regulator would continue to oversee the progress of the payment in order to ensure the sector is not “nervous.” MTN Uganda had sued Uganda Telecom over unpaid interconnection fees dating back over two years.
