CAIRO: Egyptian Public Prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud has renewed the detention of the ousted President Hosni Mubarak for another 15 days pending investigation into the killing of protesters and charges of “illicit gains and corruption,” the State-Run MENA news agency reported on Friday. Mubarak is currently at a hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh and spending his 15 days incarcerated there could face detention in Tora Prison depending on his health status, as the public prosecutor ordered on Tuesday the formation of a specialized medical committee to assess the health situation of Mubarak and to decide if the former president can be taken to the prison or if he would go to a military hospital in Cairo. MENA added that prosecutors headed to Sharm el-Sheikh to continue interrogating Mubarak. The agency reported on Thursday that Mubarak's health was “unstable.” He is 82-years-old and has suffered from a number of health difficulties in recent years. It should be noted that Mubarak was also questioned on Friday over his negotiations of gas deals with Israel at prices lower than international markets standards, accusing him of wasting public funds. On the other hand, the Illicit Gains Authority ordered on Thursday the summoning of the two wives' of Mubarak`s sons Alaa and Gamal, who are currently imprisoned in the infamous Tora Prison, pending investigation on corruption charges and inciting the killing of the protesters. The two wives, Heidi Rasekh and Khadiga al-Gamal, will be summoned for investigations by the authority on Tuesday, local reports quoted judicial sources as saying. The authority will question the two on their husbands'` wealth, after suggesting it was accumulated through illegal means, and whether Alaa and Gamal had registered their properties and assets under their wives'`names.
