At least three Bangladeshis died in Greek waters on Sunday while attempting to swim to shore from a ship moored in a Greek port, the Greek coastguard told Reuters. The ship carried over 1,200 evacuees from Libya, which has seen mounting violence over the past few weeks as pro-democracy demonstrators clash with government forces. The drownings occurred in the Souda port, on the island of Crete. Two people drowned while a third died of hypothermia. A further 16 are missing. According to the Greek Civil Protection ministry, around 50 evacuees used a rope to descend from the ship, already moored in port, to enter Greece illegally. An official suggested that the victims, all of whom were Bangladeshi, were likely trying to avoid being sent back to Bengladesh. BM
