Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Nazif yesterday opened the second phase of the Cairo Bus Terminal in Torgoman district, which is built under the BOT system for 32 years at a cost of LE 280 million. Nazif said in press statements that the project was implemented by the public and the private sectors as part of a plan to develop the Torgoman district in central Cairo. Cairo Governor Abdel Azim Wazir said a parking area was specifically built for public transportation buses to alleviate the congestion at Abdel Moneim Riad Square downtown, in addition to another parking area that can take 50 city taxis, 2700 cars and 60 public transport buses serving all destinations nationwide. He said the terminal has a two-story garage, a two-story mall, an 800-seat cinema theatre, several restaurants and a mosque. It is also equipped with electronic screens and the latest technology for luggage transfer, just like Cairo International Airport. The terminal is located near the railway station, other important taxi and bus terminals and major subway stations. Minister of Investment Dr. Mahmoud Mohi Eddin said the Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport owns 86.6% of the shares of the Egyptian Company for Integrated Projects that built the terminal. The other shareholders are Al-Ahram and Akhbar Al-Youm with 3.7% each, the Arab Union Company with 4.5% and the private sector with 1.4%. He added that the third and final phase of the project will include garages that can take 850 cars, and that 5,000 new public buses will be added to the service.
