Thousands of Yemenis have staged a demonstration before the Egyptian embassy in Sana'a. They tried to attack the embassy under the pretext of supporting the Palestinians in Gaza against what they described as weakness of Egypt's role towards the Israeli massacre in Gaza. The Yemeni security forces managed to stop them while other Yemeni protesters occupied the building of the Egyptian consulate in Aden for a short period of time for the same reason. The protesters in Aden, most of them are students at Aden University, clashed with the security elements of the consulate. They managed to break into the consulate and destroy its furniture and other contents without having any of the workers injured.
Eyewitnesses said the demonstrators, hundreds in number, burnt the Egyptian and Israeli flags and raised the Palestinian flag on the Egyptian consulate building. Sources said more than 20 demonstrators have been arrested on the backdrop of the attack.
For his part, Egypt's Ambassador in Sana'a Mohamed Morsy said the Egyptian embassy and consulate in Sana'a have been attacked by Yemeni demonstrators over the past two days, but the security forces managed to prevent them from storming in. The Yemeni officials expressed sincere regret for what happened, Morsy told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
In Cairo, the Foreign Ministry condemned storming the Egyptian consulate in Aden. The ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said: "We strongly condemn this act, as it is something new to see a mob storming a building that has immunity."
