The Latin and Caribbean states expressed Saturday their full support to Egypt's candidacy for the U.N. Security Council non-permanent membership in 2016-2017, Youm7 reported. The member states acknowledged Egypt's historic and pivotal role in supporting world causes and its current efforts to settle regional issues that threaten international peace and security, in addition to its fight against terrorism. FM Sameh Shoukry said, during a meeting with the Latin and Caribbean delegates, that Egypt's decision to run for the Security Council's non-permanent seat stems from its commitment to continue its intensive efforts to safeguard international peace and security, according to the ministry's spokesperson Ambassador Badr Abdelatty. Shoukry explained that Egypt would put the issues of third world countries on the international agenda, push for a reform of the United Nations as well as an expansion of the Security Council to include more representation for developing countries, Abdelatty added. He pointed out that Shoukry highlighted Egypt's interest in disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation as well as the settlement of regional issues in compliance with the international law.
