Burned Egyptian body
BRITISH security forces found the burned body of an Egyptian citizen in London on Tuesday. It was identified as Adel Habib Mikhail. The body was found in a car garage in Southall, a large suburban district in west London.
“The Egyptian Consulate in London is keeping track of the murder case of Mikhail after it was notified by the Egyptian Coptic Orthodox Church in London that the victim's body was found inside a burned car in one of Southall's garages,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said on Tuesday.
According to MENA, the Egyptian Consul General in London Ambassador Alaa Youssef communicated with Mikhail's parents and headed with them to the hospital where they found out that he had died upon arrival at the hospital.
After offering his condolences to Mikhail's parents, Youssef asked the British authorities for more details about the incident.
Road disaster
NINE people were killed on Sunday when the vehicle transporting them overturned and caught fire, Egypt's ambulance authority said. The accident took place on a highway outside a village in Beni Suef, near the border of the Upper Egyptian governorate of Minya.
The nine were killed when the blaze swept through the car. Two other passengers suffered third-degree burns. According to news sources, eight ambulances were dispatched to the scene and the victims were transported to hospital.
Deadly road crashes take place on a daily basis in Egypt, which is notorious for poor road safety, badly maintained infrastructure and loosely enforced traffic regulations. The country's official statistics agency says that more than 2,800 people were killed in road and train crashes in Egypt in the first half of 2015.
New TV head
PRIME Minister Sherif Ismail issued a decision on Saturday to appoint state TV anchor Safaa Hegazy as the new head of the Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU), dismissing Essam Al-Amir from his position as chairman of the ERTU's board of trustees.
The board of trustees was reshuffled for a two-year term, according to a cabinet press release on 24 April. It brings together members of different state institutions, including the Grand Mufti Shawqy Allam and experts in media communication.
Hegazy, who worked as the head of ERTU's news sector, told the press she was surprised by the decision.
Joint air force training concluded
THE EGYPTIAN air force concluded a joint training exercise with Kuwaiti forces on 25 April. The exercise, dubbed Al-Yarmouk 2, began on 10 April at the Ahmed Al-Jaber air force base in Kuwait. Training included a number of practical and theoretical lectures and practice aiming at hostile targets in a quick and precise manner. The two air forces also undertook a number of exercises using Egyptian F-16 and Kuwaiti F-18 fighter jets.
militants killed in Sinai
THIRTY Sinai militants were killed in air strikes carried out by Egypt's air force south of Sheikh Zuweid city on 25 April, according to statement posted on the Air Force spokesperson's official Facebook page.
“The Egyptian military took revenge on Sinai Liberation Day after receiving accurate information about militants' locations in areas south of Sheikh Zuweid and Al-Toma village. The air force launched several air strikes against the militants' ammunition and weapon stores. These strikes resulted in the death of 30 militants and the full destruction of their armoury,” the statement read.
The Armed Forces also thwarted an attempted attack on military checkpoints by destroying three militant vehicles transporting arms, according to the statement.
The Islamic State-affiliated terrorist group recently claimed responsibility for an attack on a security vehicle in Sheikh Zuweid that left 20 military personnel dead or injured, according to statement issued by the group.
Sinai has become the scene of frequent clashes between militants and state security forces. As a result, an extensive counter-insurgency operation was launched and the government has imposed a state of emergency in the peninsula's northern regions.
