Ahly make light of absences to go top in Egyptian league Ahly claim an easy 2-0 victory over Smouha in Alexandria to make it two wins out of two in Egyptian Premier League Group A
Abdallah El-Said, seeking to plug the gap left by the retirement of talismanic playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika, scored twice as a depleted Ahly side made light of several absences to defeat Smouha 2-0 and move top of the Egyptian Premier League Group A. The 28-year-old, who was criticised for some disappointing displays lately, moved back to his favourite position as a playmaker, producing flashes of the talent that prompted Ahly to sign him from Ismaily in 2011. He scored either side of the interval, including a fortuitous goal, to guide Ahly to their second consecutive win after they beat El-Entag El-Harby 2-0 in their league opener. The Red Devils were hardly affected by a raft of injuries that ruled the likes of Sherif Abdel-Fadil, Rami Rabea, Hossam Ashour and Sayed Moawad out of the match against Smouha, which was played in Alexandria behind closed doors. They have six points from two games, two ahead of Maqassa, ENPPI, Gouna and Arab Contractors. El-Said opened the scoring after 13 minutes when his attempted cross from a free kick flew past Smouha's poorly-positioned keeper and into the top corner. Chances were few and far between in a dull first half but Ahly could have doubled their lead on the stroke of halftime when youngster Amr Gamal, who spearheaded the team's attack for the second consecutive game, held off his marker and shot just wide from close range after connecting with a low cross. El-Said atoned for Gamal's miss on 52 minutes with a poacher's goal, poking the ball home after reacting quickest following a free-kick from the right. Smouha were unlucky not to reduce the arrears on several occasions, with Ahly keeper Sherif Ekrami pulling off a string of fine saves to thwart the hosts. Former Zamalek left-back Sabri Rahil made his debut with Ahly after replacing winger Ahmed Shokry in the second half while another youngster, Sayed El-Shabrawy, also made his first first-team appearance.
