Heightened security ahead of expected Friday protests
Cairo main squares and streets are sealed off ahead of Morsi supporters' Friday plan for protests
Published in Ahram Online on 18 - 10 - 2013

Military and police forces have blocked several main squares and streets around Cairo in expectation of weekly Friday protests by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi.
Military tanks have been stationed around Giza Security Directorate and the Saudi Arabian Embassy. Mostafa Mahmoud Square, previously a site of protests, continues to be sealed off by military tanks and forces deployed since Tuesday, the first day of Eid Al-Adha.
Demonstrations called for by the National Alliance in Support of Legitimacy -- an Islamist umbrella demanding the reinstatement of Morsi and the 2012 constitution -- are planned to take off from Assad Ibn Al-Forat Mosque in Dokki.
Morsi supporters, led by the Muslim Brotherhood, have been holding regular protests since his ouster. However, protests have progressively dwindled in size and impact.
The Brotherhood has been reeling from a security crackdown since the 14-August forced dispersal of two large pro-Morsi protest camps, with the organisation's key figures now in detention and its assets frozen.
