BREAKING: Egypt's Salafist Nour Party elects new leader Former Salafist MP Youssef Makhion becomes Nour Party's new chairman on Wednesday in uncontested party election
Egypt's Salafist Nour Party on Wednesday chose Youssef Makhion as its chairman in an uncontested internal party election. Makhion is a former member of the now-dissolved People's Assembly (the lower house of Egypt's parliament) and member of the Nour Party's supreme board. Six other candidates had initially planned to contest the position, but all of them eventually announced their withdrawal from the race. The Nour Party was previously led by Emad Abdel-Ghafour, who, before his resignation, had represented the party's 'reformist' camp. Abdel-Ghafour quit the party in late December following a dispute with followers of influential cleric Yasser El-Borhami, one of the founders of the Salafist Calling – the movement that spawned the Nour Party in 2011. Abdel-Ghafour currently heads up the newly-formed Salafist Al-Watan Party.
