Ultras, April 6 march arrives in Tahrir Square March led by football Ultras and April 6 Youth Movement arrives in Tahrir Square to join anti-Ahmed Shafiq protest on 'Determination Friday'
Hundreds of football Ultras and April 6 Youth Movement members arrived in Tahrir Square Friday afternoon to join a mass protest calling for the barring of Ahmed Shafiq from the presidential runoff. A law currently under examination by the Supreme Constitutional Court would ban Mubarak-era officials – including Shafiq – from standing for political office for five years. Parallel protests are being held in Alexandria and a number of other cities around the country. A number of revolutionary groups organised the protests and they will be attended by members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and the Salafist Nour Party, which collectively hold more than 60 per cent of the seats in parliament. Ahmed Shafiq was the last prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, a minister of civilian aviation for 7 years, and an NDP member. It is widely claimed that his presidential bid is backed by the ruling military council. The latter has denied the claim and said that Shafiq stands on equal footing with all the other presidential contenders. Shafiq will face the Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi in the presidential runoff on 16-17 June.
