Syria calls for urgent Arab League summit
Following league decision to freeze Syria's membership, Damascus urges secretary-general to call a summit to discuss the issue

The embattled regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has asked Arab League Secretary-General Nabil El-Arabi to convene an urgent league summit to discuss the recent decision to suspend Syria's membership in the pan-Arab organisation, news channel Al-Arabiya reported on Sunday.
Considered the highest level of league meeting, summits are typically attended by the heads-of-state of all member nations.
According to an official statement on Syrian state television on Sunday, Syria would “welcome” a visit by Arab League officials before Wednesday.
The league's vote to suspend Syria's membership constituted a sharp rebuke to a regime that has traditionally prided itself as a bastion of Arab nationalism.
The league's decision to freeze Syria's membership will reportedly go into effect on Wednesday. The move is unlikely, however, to bring an immediate halt to the wave of violence in Syria that has killed more than 3,500 people since mid-March, according to UN estimates.
