Suez protesters end sit-in after attack by thugs The protesters in Arbaeen will join the sit-in in Tahrir square after fighting off an attack early Sunday
Protesters in Arbaeen Square in the governorate of Suez have ended their sit-in early today. The families in Suez began a sit-in demonstration 22 days ago in Arbaeen Square after a criminal court released, on bail, 14 police officers accused of killing protesters during the 18-day uprising. The protesters claim they were attacked in the early hours of the morning by thugs trying to disperse the protest. The clashes that ensued resulted in the injury of four of the protesters. Despite the violence, the families of the martyrs refused to evacuate and eventually protesters regained control of the square. After the situation calmed down, the Suez protesters decided to end the sit-in, saying that those wanting to continue the protest would join protesters who have been camping in Tahrir Square since 8 July. Medhat Eissa, the media spokesperson for the Suez protesters, said that they were attacked after finishing a march from the square to the Governorate's headquarters. One of the protesters, Tamer Radwan, whose brother Sherif was martyred during the revolution, told Ahram Online that the families of martyrs have the right to resume protest until retribution is gained for those who died. Radwan added that they have filed a complaint to the army demanding that they arrest all fugitives accused of killing protesters, including businessman Ibrahim Farag who has allegedly killed 18 protesters in Suez during the January 25 Revolution.
