Mohamed el-Baradei's mother appeared on television for the first time Thursday, making statements concerning her son. “Since his childhood, his teachers were expecting him a bright future,” she said in a recorded clip for CBC's “Egypt Votes” program. “When he was a child, he used to break his toys to know how they work, and he was asking about everything,” she said. “When he decided to enter politics in Egypt, I told him to stay away,” she said. “I was afraid for him, especially after we knew that we were watched by the authorities.” She said that many people tried to tarnish his image, but they could not convict him of anything because he never did anything in secret. She criticized the absence of the Egyptian media when Baradei received the Nobel Prize, while Arab and Foreign media strengthened their presence around him. Finally, she wished him to win in the presidential elections. “I wish him to be the next president only for the country's benefit, not as a hope in the chair.”
