CAIRO: There is no time to pass a new electoral law, according to Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). A member of the SCAF, General Mamdouh Shahin, said the laws of the People's Assembly and Shura Council have many advantages and have been put under intense scrutiny in order to form a strong parliament. "We took a variety of opinions before passing the amended law, including the removal of women's quota and replacing it with a law stating a certain number of women must run in every political party. This is not an imposition since surely every party has female members," Shahin said in a telephone call to the evening talk show ‘10:00 P.M.' Shahin said there will be large posters outside polling stations with pictures of all the candidates so there is no confusion about who is being picked by voters. 'The SCAF sat down with all political parties and went through every section in the laws; there were a few general criticisms except about the actual electoral system. But we reached a consensus and the amended law will be applied just to the two running parties and independents," said Shahin. Arabic here
