Iraqi car bomb toll rises to 30
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 22 - 05 - 2010

BAGHDAD – Iraqi police and morgue officials say the death toll in a car bombing at an open-air market in a Shi'ite town northeast of Baghdad has risen to 30.
Friday's bomb struck the town of Khalis, a Shi'ite enclave 50 miles (80 kilometres) north of Baghdad in the largely Sunni province of Diyala. Most of those killed were sitting in a cafe in the center of the market.
About 80 people were also wounded in the attack.
All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media.Khalis is a former al-Qaeda in Iraq stronghold. It has seen powerful blasts, including a restaurant twin bombing that killed 57 in March.
