ASSIUT- Fourteen people died Monday and eight others were injured in a car crash near the Upper Egyptian city of Assiut when their microbus collided head-on with a truck laden with wheat sacks, a security official said. "A speeding truck hit the microbus, which was heading to Assiut from Cairo when the accident took place near the village of Dareen," the official was quoted by the Middle East News Agency (MENA) as saying. He added that four ambulances had rushed to the scene and carried the injured to the nearby hospitals. "Assiut prosecutors reviewed the scene of the accident and the Assiut Governor granted LE5,000 for the family of each victim," the official said. On Friday night nine foreign tourists were killed in a road crash in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Road accidents are common in Egypt because of bad roads, reckless driving and poor enforcement of traffic rules. An estimated 8,000 people die in car accidents annually.
