US Envoy and Ambassador to Libya Richard Norland expressed his country's support for any process that would give Libyans the "strong, united, sovereign, and elected government" they deserve. This came in a telephone call on Tuesday with the Head of the Supreme Council of State, Khaled Al-Mishri, where Norland confirmed the US' support for efforts to restore momentum to the presidential and parliamentary elections, after they were postponed last December. He referred to the readiness of about three million Libyans to cast their votes and also addressed the House of Representatives' intensive efforts to agree quickly on a road map that will give the people confidence that the elections will be held as soon as possible. A statement by the Supreme Council of State referred to "Norland's support for these steps" to address the current blockage in the electoral process. Furthermore, Al-Mishri said that it is necessary to push the constitutional path to hold elections based on sound laws and specific terms. During the past days, Al-Mishri has held meetings with the Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-general for Libya, Stephanie Williams; the Speaker of the House of Representatives-Designate, Fawzi Al-nuweiri; and diplomats on reviving the constitutional process to prepare for the elections.
