Egypt's Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawi, and Giza Governor Ahmed Rashid inaugurated, on Sunday, an intermediate waste station in Giza's Al-Baragil area.
Fouad said that the 3,000 sqm station was entirely built through the Ministry of Environment, at a cost of EGP 23m, by contracting with the Arab Organization for Industrialization (AOI) and Ain Shams University.
The Minister said that the station's opening is a new step in developing the infrastructure of Egypt's waste system, within the Ministry of Environment's planning, regulatory, and control role in the new waste management system.
For his part, Shaarawy noted that the station's opening comes as part of the Egyptian Government's efforts to develop the waste system infrastructure in Giza. It aims to raise the efficiency of collection and transportation operations in the governorate.
He added that the station has a design capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day and serves the residents of the centre and city of Awseem, Al-Baragil, and the surrounding villages, where about 500,000 people live.
Shaarawy explained further that the total cost of the intermediate station in Al-Baragil is about EGP 14m, in addition to the equipment for the system at a cost of EGP 9m.
He mentioned that Giza Governorate recently saw the establishment of a sanitary, safe landfill for waste on an area of 10 feddan in Shabramant, at a cost of EGP 35m.
The minister also pointed out that to complete the second phase of serving the governorate centres, three health landfills will be established in Al-Qanater, Al-Ayat and Al-Saff. This is in addition to an intermediate station in Atfih, with an estimated total cost of about EGP 114m.
