Al-Azhar and Islamic Research Academy mourned on Saturday Egyptian Islamic scholar Mohamed Emarah, who died late on Friday at the age of 89.
In a statement, Al-Azhar said that history will remember the late Islamic thinker with his “moderate ideology, and defending the tolerance of Islam.”
“He left a vacuum which is difficult to fill among the lines of senior scholars,” Al-Azhar said.
Meanwhile, Al-Azhar's Islamic Research Academy also mourned Emarah, saying that he contributed to the service of Islamand Muslims.
Emarah's funeral was held at Al Hamd Mosque on Saturday, in the fifth settlement, east Cairo.
Khaled Emarah, the scholar's son, announced the death of his father in a Facebook post on Friday. “He left (us) quietly without pain or suffering, surrounded by his small family.”
Emarah was born in 1931 in the village of Qillin, Kafr Al-Sheikh. He held a bachelor's degree in Arabic Language and Islamic Sciences, Faculty of Dar al-Ulum, Cairo University.
He did his Master's and PhD degrees in Islamic sciences with specialisation in Islamic philosophy from Faculty of Dar al-Ulum, Cairo University.
He was an Islamic scholar, author and a member of the Islamic Research Academy and Azhar's Council of Senior Scholars. His books include “The Islamic Tolerance,” “Is Islam the Solution? Why and How?" and “Islam and the Revolution.”
