A train in Assiut collided with a school bus, killing over 40 children. Minister of Transportation Mohamed Rashad Al-Mateeny resigned early Saturday morning after the deadly accident. Head of the Railway Authority Mostafa Qenawi also resigned and will be referred to investigation for the most recent railway accident. The Ministry of Health announced in an initial statement that 47 had died, although a final death toll has not been determined. Al-Mateeny had already reportedly considered resigning in the aftermath of a train collision in Fayoum that killed three people and injured dozens a week ago. An initial investigation showed that the accident was caused by negligence. Presidential spokesman Yasser Aly released a statement saying that President Mohamed Morsy mandated that Prime Minister Hesham Qandil, the Minister of Health, the Minister of Defence, and the Governor of Assiut provide all the assistance they could to the families of the victims of the train crash. Morsy also expressed his condolences, and demanded that investigations be undertaken as soon as possible as a first step to find those responsible and hold them accountable.
