CAIRO: Presidential candidate, Amr Moussa, former Secretary General of the Arab League, called on Sunday for allowing international monitoring of the upcoming presidential elections in Egypt, in order to maintain transparency and legitimacy in the upcoming elections. He also warned against prolonging the transitional period until the constitution is drafted, stressing that it would be a grave move with dire consequences. Moussa said Sunday, he is proud of his former position as Foreign Minister during the Mubarak era, as he won the support of the Egyptian public opinion after the performance carried out by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry. He added that repeated criticism of the performance of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces is ‘harmful to Egypt`s interest', pointing out that the role of the military will end, once a transfer of power occurs, and that the army will return to its barracks. Moussa declared he would not run for a second presidential term if he wins, adding, however, “I support the right of a president to run for a second term.” He described the former regime of Hosni Mubarak as “a dictatorial military regime, that worked on looting of Egyptian freedoms” and rejected being described as one of the figures of the former regime. He added that he would seek to achieve security in the first hundred days in the event of his inauguration, pointing to the need to fight corruption within the state and make it a key role for each state institution. He stressed that he is not a candidate who is favored by a military or a religious institution.
