Egypt Alliance of Women Rights outline their vision for new constitution
Published in Bikya Masr on 29 - 04 - 2012

CAIRO: A meeting held by the Alliance of Women Rights Organizations on Saturday, held under the title “the demands of women for the constitution,” recommended a number of proposals on the criteria for the formation of the Constituent Assembly whom, is to draft the constitution and the fundamental principles that must be guaranteed by the constitution and to protect women's rights.
One of the main criteria proposed for the formation of the Constituent Assembly is the exclusion of members of the committee, which oversaw the constitutional amendments, outlined in the “Constitutional Declaration,” issued by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces SCAF in March 2011, and the representation of constitutional scholars with the need for justice and equality in the trade union representation, and the targeting of independent unions, not just the official unions and to represent the unions of farmers, fishermen and entrepreneurs as well as informal employment.
The Alliance members demanded to represent different political currents in the Assembly, and prevent the domination of a particular political party, and seek a balanced representation, that does not allow control of a particular force to monopolize the assembly.
They pointed out the importance of representation by the coalitions and blocs of political movements, taking into account the selection of the Assembly Members on the nomination within the institutions, and not based on the selection of MPs, and to be elected and not selected by ideological and religious institutions.
As for the basic principles of the Constitution proposed by the feminist activists , they demanded adding an amendment to the articles regarding equality and non-discrimination to all items of Egypt`s new constitution, and to take into account the details associated with the freedoms to avoid any conflict between the principles of the constitution and the provisions of the law and the constitution and the allocation of a part of the state`s budget for women.
The alliance stressed the importance of a reference to the international conventions and include the addition on the principle of equal sharing in various state bodies, as well as ensuring the rights of men and elder women, and ensure the human rights of people with special needs as a vital group of the society.
